Skin oncology is my main area of specialisation and my greatest area of interest. From the outset, my training was geared towards Skin Oncology, with several placements/courses (e.g. IPO Porto). In addition to clinical work, I carry out research into non-melanoma skin cancer (Basal Cell Carcinoma and Squamous Cell Carcinoma) at IPATIMUP and i3S. In this area it is possible to diagnose and treat the most common skin cancers (basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma) as well as other rarer tumours (cutaneous lymphomas, sarcomas, dermatofibrosarcomas). Besides malignant lesions, the focus is also on the prevention and treatment of pre-malignant lesions (actinic keratoses), which may progress to squamous cell carcinoma if not properly treated. Atypical naevi are another major concern in the Dermatology consultation, since they carry an increased risk of progressing to melanoma (a skin cancer with a poor prognosis if it is not diagnosed and treated in good time). Assessing naevi ("moles") using manual and digital dermoscopy is essential in the skin cancer screening consultation. In this area we also encourage Primary Prevention (sun safety measures) and Secondary Prevention of Skin Cancer (self-examination, recognising warning signs, the ABCDE rule, the "ugly duckling" sign).
